AnswerAmerican roulette pays the same as European roulette on a wheel with an extra losing pocket. The house edge is 5.26%; avoid it when a single-zero table is available.
Why it costs double
Payouts are still set for 36 numbers, but the wheel has 38. Two pockets in 38 go to the house instead of one in 37.

The five-number bet
0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 together pay 6 to 1, at a 7.89% edge: the worst bet on any roulette table.
In UK lobbies
American wheels are listed beside European ones, sometimes with a similar name. There is no reason to choose one.
